Re: Tenor Setup

Sax:
Selmer Mark VI - 79*** - ± 1958

Mthpcs:
Otto Link Florida STM Double Ring 7* - ± 1955 and
Otto Link Florida STM Early Babbitt 7* - ± 1975
NB: Both pcs soon to be refaced by Nicolas Trefeil

Ligature:
Otto Link New York Tone Master - 1950

Reeds:
François Louis 3 and
Rigotti Gold 3 Medium

1971 MK VI (186xxx) w/orig. neck (tweaked by Kim Bock) and Guardala 'King Curtis' (original) w/2.5 reeds - playing old Glotin 'Groove' as long as they last.
1989 Selmer USA (825xxx) w/Series III brass neck, same mouthpiece.

The thing is, while these horns are surely different, play different and sound different, right now I am enjoying them both immensely. Each one has its own thing and its totally fun to experience that on my gigs. If I had to characterize the differences, I'd say the VI is more 'buttery' and warmer while the USA has a little more resistance along with a 'huskier' sound - pretty much what you might expect from an older American horn, like a Conn, but with the familiar Selmer key work. The neck is critical on the USA - I've always played a VI-style neck on it because the original was a non-starter - I could not have used the sax with that neck. Fortunately I had a new MK VI replacement neck which turned out to be good on it but not as good as the III neck.

Finally, I'm somewhat settled on the following setups:
  • Aerophone GO, Audio Modeling SWAM Saxophones (and Trumpets), MainStage 3
  • Conn 16M, Sakshama Custom Z Sterling Silver 7*, Francois Louis Ultimate S ligature, Vandoren Java Green 3
  • Keilwerth ST90 IV, 10mfan Robusto II Ultem 7*, Marc Jean II 701, Fiberreed Carbon M
  • Selmer Balanced Action, Theo Wanne (TW) Metal Ambika 3 7*, TW Liberty, Rigotti Gold Jazz 3S
  • SML Rev. D, Eastern Music DG Fat Boy 8, Saxworks Clarity, Vandoren Java Red 3
  • Yanagisawa TWO33, Gottsu Master 2018 8**, Vandoren Optimum LC080P, Boston Sax Shop 2.5
GAS is finally over (I hope).

Thanks partly to you for posting about the Carbon with Robusto; I gave the combination a try and really love it.
Btw, after I received the Robusto and tried it out with the ST90, the missus, who were just outside the room, complimented on how good the sound was after I was done playing.
So, two thumbs up to you for a really great mouthpiece!

Thanks bro! That means the world to me.
I am really digging those Carbon Fberreeds with my pieces.
For cane, so many are enjoying the BSS reeds with my pieces.
Enjoy and stay in touch.
I'm playing 3.5H Rigotti Golds on my Robusto and finding the newer batch is a little soft for my liking, so I'm thinking about trying the 4 lights...but worried being an uncommon size they'd likely still be from the last batch and be too stiff. The Carbon Fiberreed is one of the few synthetics to make me curious lately. What strength do you think might match most closely to what I'm on now?

Martin Committee III, Otto Link Tone Edge 7, Rovner Light, La Voz Medium
Grassi Professional 2000, Otto Link "New Vintage" Tone Edge 7, Rovner Light, La Voz Medium

In terms of playability, the OL "New Vintage" is much better than my regular Tone Edge. But intonation wise, the regular Tone Edge works better on my Martin. I'd love a largish chamber piece like that Tone Edge with the presence of the "New Vintage".

Anyway, the Grassi Pro 2000 has become my main tenor; it is much better than the low price would make one believe!

Ishimori Woodstone UL Tenor Saxophone with original (pre Selmer buyout) ARB Beechler Great Neck 6* cut to 0.98 Mouthpiece and Rovner 2L ligature, currently trying different reeds 21/2-3. Use same mpc setup on Selmer Mark VI and Yani T-WO1. This Ishi is the sh$t, man, what a player. I put the other two aside after getting this, it makes me want to play all day, a horn worthy of serious consideration IMO.
